Hello everyone! I was wondering why Windows ME was released after the Neptune project cancelled although Neptune was to replace the Windows 9x series and scheduled to be the first consumer version of Windows built on Windows NT code?

Windows ME was conceived in early 1999, before Neptune was cancelled. The two projects ran side by side for a while and shared some features, most notably the Activity Centers. I suppose they decided to do another 9x release because the progress on Neptune was too slow, so they decided to ship some of the new features in another, this time really the final, 9x release.

You don't, as we won't accept it since it doesn't fulfill any of the requirements for a proper dump. If you want to share it on the forum you can (providing it's proper abandonware) but we won't archive it.

Windows NT and DoubleSpace

Did you know that Windows NT was going to include DoubleSpace support at some point?

I didn't, but it turns out the NT4 source has everything in place to support DoubleSpace - down to the point where you could install Windows NT inside a DoubleSpace partition and it'd boot off that just fine with only NTLDR/NTDETECT/boot.ini having to be stored on the host drive. The code mentions MS-DOS 6.2 (released November 1993) so this functionality was likely slated for an NT 3.5 release.

The code is partly wrapped inside #ifs called "DBLSPACE_LEGAL" which suggests the legal battle with Stac going on at that time was the reason for its removal. Since Stac managed to get that preliminary injunction that prevented Microsoft from selling MS-DOS 6.2 with DoubleSpace, they couldn't relase NT with the same functionality either. And once the legal battle was over, they apparently never bothered re-implementing that functionality.

The obvious use for that would be dual-boot functionality with MS-DOS and later Windows 95 since Windows NT had their own NTFS compression. I don't think it was ever intended for more than that, though surprisingly Disk Administrator was to support compressing/uncompressing DoubleSpace volumes. It's an interesting tidbit, nonetheless.

Make sure you have selected an actual folder in the left pane. The download option gets grayed out if Computer is selected.

[OFFER] SimCity 4 (without Rush Hour) English SKU1

So I've got a copy of the vanilla SimCity 4 that does not include Rush Hour expansion. SKU is English (North America) and the version is 1.0.272.0 (i.e. included the P2 patch).

Non-expansion version lacks many road, transpotation and building types than the Rush Hour (Deluxe version, which is basically vanilla + RH), and cannot use mods created by the Building Architect Tool. Game also runs at hard difficulty (you start with $100k funds, have to spend a lot of effort to grow the city, etc; cities created in vanilla will show as hard difficulty if you upgrade the game to Rush Hour). It also does not show commute route, cannot mark zoned buildings as historical, and is missing several other features. Our FTP has the Deluxe version but not the vanilla one.

Game comes with two (2) CDs and I dumped them with Alcohol 120%. The disks are equipped with SafeDisc protection and both disks were giving "Read data examination error" in the first 10k or so blocks during the dumping but after that everything seemed okay. First disk was saved as SIMCITY4.mds but I changed the name to SIMCITY4_1.mds to reflect it being the first disk. Will have to remove some information from the log because Alcohol 120% registration info shows in the log and contains my personal info.

I will do a proper scan (600 dpi or above, using a scanner) for the disks and case tomorrow.

I tested it at a Windows 2000 guest in VMware. The game runs when disk 1 or disk 2 is mounted although I got DirectDraw error at startup, probably due to the VMware SVGA driver; works fine otherwise. Have not tested in a physical machine. If you can't run it in Windows 7 or 10, it's probably because Microsoft stopped supporting SafeDisc in Windows 10 and Windows 7 KB3086255 update.

A screenshot of the game. You can notice the query tool does not have commute route lookup, zoned building cannot be marked as historical, and road tool only consists of road, street and bus stop.

Hello everyone! I installed 4074 a while ago and while messing around with the text to speech settings I was somehow able to get V6.5 and V7.0 to show up in the languages pulldown menu in the speech recognition tab. Also I was able to to get two new voices in the text to speech tab, LH michael and i think LH anne both were low quality soundings. I deleted the VM after I broke it, but I have never been able to get those voices to show back up. Does anyone know of a way to force these to show up in the speech tab? I can't really remember what I did to make them show up, still only have MS sam and nothing else.

This forum here seems to have the ability to talk about old unsupported operating systems without stating the obvious regarding the support status.
Probably best to ask the question there, BA seems to be centered around downloading & collecting old operating systems, not actually using & talking about them..

Counting down the minutes before this post gets deleted.. 2, 1, boom.

He might be, but where's the evidence for his claim?
You use a Radeon 9600, he probably used a shitty integrated graphic card, and 7 became something like a game, where you need a minimal graphic card in order to run the system smooth (In fact, this comes since Vista with Aero). I can comprobate that a P4 runs 7 nice, the issue here isn't with the processor, Windows 7 requires a minimal of 1 GB of memory in order to run questionably usable, but in order for the system to be fast, you need 2 GB of RAM, and a basic DirectX 9 graphic card. Also having a good disk speed increases the system load times

Sounds great! Be sure to read the discs with DPM enabled too. And don't forget the logs . I always trim the log as well to remove any personal info.

An update on the SOUND driver debate: the recently found Tandy 2000 driver disk for Windows 1.x has a sound driver for Tandy 2000/1000. So it'd be nice if anyone with sufficient knowledge could explore it's capabilities (if there even are any beyond the regular PC speaker features).

EDIT: I've made a quick comparison of SOUND.DRV from retail and TANSOUND.DRV (1000/2000 driver). The major difference seems to be in the function DoBeep, which is more complex in the Tandy driver. My very limited guess as to what the expanded functionality in here does would be that it checks for the presence of the Tandy sound chip and then proceeds to use that, otherwise it does the same things as the regular driver.

Should be easy to test this for anyone who knows how to make a Windows 1.0 application.

There's also differences in other routines in the same fashion, where code branches out and one branch does the same PC speaker stuff, while the other does something else. So I think it's safe to say this driver supports more than just the usual PC speaker.

In that case it will take me a while to redo the dump. Yesterday's dump was working but without DPM because I tried with DPM and got into the same situation as today.

I did read the disk with DPM enabled today but after that it was still giving me the "Read data examination error"s and there was a message saying cannot get DPM info from current device. Please let me know if this can still be accepted, or if I have to use a different DVD drive.

https://www.betaarchive.com/imageupload/2018-10/1540647756.th.57282.png

Also before I start the dump, I chose "SafeDisc 2/3/4" as the datatype, in the reading options it only has "skip reading erros" and "fast skip error blocks" selected, and if I check "data position measurement" or anything else the datatype automatically becomes "customized".

Yeah it will be accepted. You can always try on a different drive and see if you get any better results, but otherwise i'll accept it as-is.

I guess Camwinny was not able to debomb the second the second index. I will try to see if I can use the first index again to install Windows Media Center by using the Windows 10 RTM version of the Windows Media Center installation pack.
